Doc Watson, Folk Music, and Family Picking

By August 6, 2014Culture, Folk

My last post was about the relationship between apprenticeship and education. Here is a great clip of the famous bluegrass/folk guitarist Doc Watson  with his family and Earl Scruggs playing in his backyard in North Carolina. There’s no better way to learn this kind of music than sitting amongst friends and family, watching, experiencing, imbibing the sound, and imitating.

Riverside Folk Sessions are about making music part of  family life and popular culture again. We live in a world of American Idols and Get Rich Talent Shows. Here is an example of music in the context of authentic American culture.

Enjoy!
