Eric the Red was a Norse men. Norse men are people who live in northern Europe. They are called other names some times such as north men or Vikings. They are called Vikings because they would normally build there houses on Viks, also known as bays. Eric had a son named Leif, Leif Ericsson. The Norse men were pagan and did not know of Jesus. Leif Ericsson took a trip and sailed to Norway and it was there where he met King Olaf. King Olaf was Catholic and taught Leif all about God and Leif became Catholic. He sailed to Greenland, where his father was settling, to tell him about the Catholic Church. On his voyage the winds blew him west to America; he did not know it was America for it had not yet been discovered. They called this new land Vineland. Leif Ericsson was the first Norseman to discover America.
