Newgrange was built over 5,000 years ago, in the year 3200 B.C. It is older than Stonehenge and the great pyramids of Giza. There is an ancient story about the Tuatha De Danann saying that they built Newgrange as a burial place for their king and his three sons.
In 1690, landowner Charles Campbell told his workers to move some rocks. Behind those rocks was the entrance to Newgrange. On the Winter Solstice, December 21st, sunlight goes into Newgrange and illuminates the passage and the room at the end for 17 minutes.
When we visited there, we took a bus from the visitor’s center. Inside Newgrange, there was only enough room for one person to walk at a time. There were lights inside, but when we were in the chamber they were turned off. The guide demonstrated the illumination with a light acting like the sun.
This is Cosmic Celt signing out.
