Today on the Incoming Press, I, the dog fighter, will tell you about the American plane the Bell P-39 Airacobra. The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of the most used aircraft in World War II when the United States entered the war. The engineer of the Bell P-39 Airacobra was Benjamin Scovill “Ben” Kelsey a member of the U.S. air force. The Bell P-39 Airacobra was flown by five different countries: the United States, France, England, China, and Russia. The Bell P-39 Airacobra fought in a lot of battles including the fight for France. The Bell P-39 Airacobra was a very successful airplane and is considered one of the best planes of World War II. Bell P-39 Airacobra did not really have any special mode of attack. It was designed to attack its enemies plane to plane kind of like hand to hand combat.
Benjamin Scovill Kelsey “Ben” Kelsey wanted to pilot when he was a boy. When he was15 years old, Benjamin completed a flying course with the Curtiss Flying Service. He joined the United states air force in 1929. He designed the Bell P-39 Airacobra in 1939. Benjamin also helped to design the p-51 mustard, another very successful plane. Benjamin was a very talented engineer.
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was flown by the U.S., the French, British, Russia, and China. The U.S. flew the Bell P-39 Airacobra the shortest time of all the countries but still had the same success with it. In fact, the U.S. only flew the P-39 at the beginning of the war, even though they had designed it. The best P-39 pilots were the Russian air force pilots. Some of the other countries used the P-39 until the end of WW II and after it, until the 1950’s. The P-39 was a very well engineered air plane.
The Bell P-39 Airacobra fought in many battles. The main battle was the Battle of France. When France surrendered to Germany, all the surviving P-39’s from the Battle of France flew to England. There they took part in protecting England from bombing German planes and they probably took part in the Battle of Britain. China also used the P-39’s to fight the Japanese on the Pacific front. The P-39 flew on many important battle missions in history.
The weapons on the P-39 were primarily machine guns. They consisted of one 37mm nose cannon, two .50 caliber machine guns, and up to four .30 caliber wing machine guns. They tried to put on heavier cannons, but the plane’s structure could not take the weight of the extra weapons. They kept the plane as light as they possibly could. The weapons of the P-39 worked great even though they could only put on a small amount.
The P-39 was a well designed plane, even though it wasn’t used for very long by the Americans. Benjamin Kelsey, the engineer, was a very good designer who designed two planes for World War II. The P-39 h elped the French and the English out during the attacks of the Germans and during the battles trying to take back France. The weapons on the P-39 were very good weapons for that airplane design and were able to be used to shoot down many German planes. The P-39 was a very well designed airplane and was exactly what the French and British needed.
