The Siege of Paris 885-886

Epic Battles of Medieval History

by Attila the Fun

The Vikings sailed down the Seine river with 700 hundred ships ready to attack Paris.  However, Count Odo of Paris  refused to let them through.  With the bridges and forts that were already built, the soldiers of Paris tried to stop as many of the Vikings as they could.  When those failed the Vikings sailed down farther and attacked the tower to the right of the city but they failed to take it and many of them died in trying so.  The Vikings next build camps around the city but didn’t have enough men because of the failed attack, so they couldn’t  surround the whole entire city,  which was a big disadvantage for the viking invaders.  Later, the Vikings came back and attacked the city from the ground and from the sea but failed to break in.  In the mist of the battle a Frankish relief force sent by Charles the Fat attacked the Vikings and the Frankish army’s leader is killed.  After a year when the Vikings were done fighting, they retreated and headed back down the river.  Later the Vikings  asked if they could continue their campaign down in Burgundy,  and they also said they would never attack Paris again if they let them by.  The rulers of paris decided to let the go and that was the end of it.

Thank you for reading and be sure to read next my blog for the epic battle of Lechfeld, The Romans vs Germans,  one of the more succsesful German battles.
