Giant squids are one of the largest animals in the world. Female giant squids get up to about 43 feet long, and male giant squids can get up to 33 feet long, smaller than the female. So far the largest giant squid was 66 feet long and weighed about one ton. All the giant squids have extremely large eyes, the size of a basketball. They are the largest of the squid species. Giant squids have large heads; they also have eight arms and two tentacles. They have strong jaws which are shaped like a parrot beak. Their tentacles are equipped with four rows of suction cups with hooks which help them catch their prey. Their arms are 10 feet long, and like the rest of them, they are completely boneless.
Giant squids live deep down in the ocean; they live in all the oceans of the world. They are more likely found in Norway, New Foundland, New Zealand, and Australia. They like the cooler waters; they live in the depth of 3000 to 6000.
Giant squids prey on deep sea fish and other squid species. Sometimes they even eat smaller whales. They use their tentacles to hold onto their prey and to squeeze it; they also use their teeth to shred the food and to swallow it.
The only predator of the giant squid is the sperm whale and pilot whales.
Giant squids have a habit of trying to kill whales that are bigger than they are. One time, when a sperm whale and a giant squid attacked each other, the result was that neither animal won. People found the whale washed up on the shore with the giant squids head in its mouth and the squid’s tentacles attached to the whale.
There are many legends about the giant squid, but one of them is a giant squid called the Kraken. The Kraken is a legend that was one mile long, which attacked ships. Some tales say that the Kraken was so huge that its body could be mistaken for an island. The Kraken are said to lie at the bottom of the sea, and then attack ships either because they are in search of food and because the ship disturbed it.
