Good and Bad Coaches

By October 13, 2014

In my long career, I have had plenty of time to observe good and bad coaches. On a scale of one to ten, those who earn a “ten” in my book are just silent and take everything in. My least favorite are the ones who say things like: “Ref, FOUL!” Or “What are you THINKING?!” “Can’t you see he was twenty feet off sides?” Or even: “Look—even my four-year-old saw it! Do you need him to help out?!” Some of these coaches also yell at their own players. For instance, “Tom, get BACK!” Or “Tom, CONTAIN!”

The silent coaches who take everything in make the game more relaxing for their players. The crazier coaches, on the other hand, make the game more disturbing and are even distracting to the players so that their players may make more mistakes. Even worse, such coaches could earn themselves a yellow card and be ejected from the game. This would leave their teams without a coach.

I am practically positive that I would like to be a mellow coach when given the chance.
