Sarissa

By January 24, 2015

Pos Ise! (That’s ancient Greek for how are you.) I’m the Greek gumshoe. I’ve hunted out another weapon for us.

The Sarissa was a 13-23 foot spear. It had a small buttspike on the end, caled a ‘sauropter’ (meaning ‘lizard-killer) which could be used as another head to the spear.

The buttspike could also be used as a stand for the weapon. The sarissa also has a round metal ball right above the buttspike so if the spearhead and the buttspike were broken off, you could use the ball as a mace.

The sarissa was made by Phillip the Second and used as a replacement of the dory. (See my blog on the subject.)

The sarissa is a very cool weapon with a very weird name. Ha, ha, ha.

Tune in next time when we will hunt out another weapon.
