THE PURPLE FROG

By November 18, 2015

Have you ever seen such a weird creature as this???

Purple-frog-1

This creature is known as a Purple Frog, and belongs to the Sooglossidae family. The purple frog, which is found in the Western Ghats of India, was not officially discovered until October of 2003, when it was first publicly described by S.D. Biju from the Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute in Palode, India. It had long been known by locals, however. In fact, later, in 2015, researchers found that tadpoles of these peculiar frogs had traditionally been consumed by local tribes.

The frog spends most of the year underground, surfacing only for about two weeks to mate. Because the purple frog spends the majority of its life underground, it escaped earlier notice by researchers. Unlike most burrowing species of frog that surface to feed, however, the purple frog stays under the surface to feed and has been found to eat termites using its tongue to drag them in to its mouth. During mating season, however, the frog does come to the surface. As part of the mating ritual, the males sit in stream-side burrows and sing their mating calls (which sound a bit like the clucking of chickens). Once they have mated, female purple frogs lay more than 3000 eggs. Despite this significant number of offspring, Purple frogs are, sadly, beginning to become extinct.
