Deep in the rainforest a colorful bird hops along a branch, turns, and looks at you. Its colors are attracting. You follow nearby. It has a colorful beak and body. It couldn’t be a parrot. What on earth could it be? Its a toucan!
Unlike most birds toucans have two toes facing forward and two facing backward. When a toucan flies, its bill seems like it would cause problems making it fly awkwardly. The bill, almost cartoonish, makes its owner look unbalanced. Actually the bill is light with criss crossing strips inside. This bill is mainly used to reach up, down, or side to side reaching fruit, its favorite food. They also eat: spiders, insects, lizards, frogs, snakes, and small reptiles. If they get the chance, they will even eat small birds or eggs from other birds’ nests. They have a pretty healthy diet.
